The Two Ways to Transport a Two-Wheeler in Indian Railways
Indian Railways offers the most cost-effective and reliable intercity motorcycle transport in India. Whether you are relocating for a job, heading to college, or embarking on a long tour, you can ship your scooter or bike either accompanied on the same train (As Luggage) or sent independently as freight (As Parcel).
1. Luggage vs. Parcel: Choosing the Right Transport Option
Understanding the differences between Luggage and Parcel helps you choose the fastest and most convenient method:
Carried on Your Same Train
Requires a confirmed passenger ticket on the same train. Your motorcycle travels inside your train's guard brake van (SLR). Same-day immediate collection on the platform upon arrival!
Sent Independently as Freight
No passenger ticket required. Anyone can book at the station parcel office. Dispatched on any scheduled train or parcel van within 24 to 72 hours.
2. The 4-Part Realistic Cost Breakdown (No Hidden Fees)
Commercial booking apps often quote only the base freight rate and leave out station out-of-pocket costs. The actual total expense consists of four distinct components:
Calculated on distance slabs per quintal (100 kg) using Indian Railways Scale-P (Premier Mail/Express) or Scale-L (Luggage rate), plus a standard 2% railway development charge.
Station porters wrap your bike in gunny sacks, twine, and cardboard to protect the fuel tank and engine. Premium 3-layer bubble wrap and mirror foam protection costs ₹450 to ₹500.
Standard loading porter charge (approx ₹100–₹120 at origin platform) plus destination unloading porter fee (approx ₹100–₹120) to roll the bike into the parcel shed.

3. Why Railways Charges on "Deemed Weight" (Rule 1102)
Many passengers are surprised when their 105 kg Activa is billed as 150 kg, or their 190 kg Royal Enfield Classic is billed as 250 kg. Under Rule 1102 of the Indian Railways Commercial Manual, two-wheelers occupy fixed cubic floor area in the brake van and cannot be stacked. Charges are therefore based on standardized deemed minimum weights:
Honda Activa, Suzuki Access, TVS Jupiter, Scooty Pep, TVS XL 100.
Hero Splendor, Honda Shine, Bajaj Pulsar 125/150, TVS Apache 160, Yamaha FZ.

4. The Direct Train Rule: Avoid Intermediate Yard Transshipment
If no direct train exists between your origin and destination, railway staff will often refuse parcel booking or require multi-hop transshipment. In intermediate yards, vehicles are unloaded and reloaded manually, which frequently leads to broken mirrors, tank dents, and delays of 1 to 2 weeks.
👉 Pro Strategy: If you live in a smaller city without direct trains to your destination (e.g. Nashik to Bengaluru), ride or transport your motorcycle to the nearest major junction hub (e.g. Kalyan or Pune) where multiple direct trains operate daily.
5. Emptying Your Petrol Tank: Section 164 Railways Act
Carrying flammable fuel inside train coaches or guard brake vans is prohibited under Section 164 of the Railways Act. Booking clerks check the fuel tank before issuing the weighbridge slip. If fuel remains, booking will be refused and you may face a fine of up to ₹1,000.
- Arrive with only 0.5 liters of fuel remaining.
- Station porters siphon out the remaining petrol into cans for ₹50–₹100.
- Rev the engine until it cuts off completely to prove the carburetor/FI line is dry.
- Carry an empty, clean 1-liter plastic bottle in your backpack so you can buy fuel from the nearest bunk after picking up your bike!
6. Documents Required & Father/Owner Authorization NOC
Carry the following documents to the station parcel counter:
- Original Registration Certificate (RC) + 2 self-attested photocopies (or mParivahan/DigiLocker document).
- Valid Insurance Policy copy.
- Valid Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate.
- Government Photo ID Proof (Aadhaar Card, Driving License, Voter ID).
- Confirmed Passenger Ticket (strictly required if booking as Luggage).
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) / Authority Letter (mandatory if the vehicle is registered under your father's, relative's, or company's name).
