The Core Indian Railways Charting Framework
In Indian Railways, chart preparation is an automated batch process executed by the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS). Every train has precisely two reservation charts: the 1st Chart and the 2nd (Final) Chart.
1. The 1st Reservation Chart: When Does It Prepare?
Indian Railways follows two strict rules depending on your train's scheduled departure time from the originating station:
4 Hours Prior to Departure
If your train departs between 11:01 AM and 11:59 PM, the 1st chart is prepared at least 4 hours before scheduled departure from the train's originating terminal.
8:00 PM the Previous Night
If your train departs between 00:01 AM and 11:00 AM, chart preparation occurs at 8:00 PM on the previous calendar evening to ensure passengers have notice before overnight sleep.
2. RAC vs Waiting List: Critical Differences After Charting
Passengers with RAC status on the final chart are legally entitled to board the train. You are assigned a confirmed seat (a sitting share on a Side Lower berth). If any confirmed passenger cancels or does not turn up, the onboard TTE will upgrade you to a full sleeping berth in order of seniority.
If an online e-ticket remains on the Waiting List after the final chart is generated, IRCTC automatically cancels the ticket and processes a 100% refund (minus nominal clerkage) back to your original payment method. You are strictly prohibited from boarding reserved coaches.
3. How to Grab 10% Discounted Current Booking Berths
Once the 1st chart is completed, any unallotted or emergency quota berths that remain vacant are released to the public under Current Booking (Current Reservation). Indian Railways offers a flat 10% discount on base fares for these vacant seats. Booking stays open on IRCTC and station reservation counters until the 2nd (final) chart is prepared ~30 minutes prior to departure.
