The Telescopic Fare Structure of Indian Railways

Unlike flight pricing that fluctuates minute-by-minute, Indian Railways passenger fares are governed by official distance slabs published in the IRCTC Coaching Tariff. The core principle is telescopic rate tapering: the per-kilometer cost decreases as distance increases.

The 4-Step Indian Railways Fare Formula

Step 1

Telescopic Base Fare

Base fare is looked up from distance slabs (e.g. 1-50 km, 51-100 km, up to 5000 km). Long-distance segments enjoy a lower marginal rate per 100 km compared to short trips.

Step 2

Fixed Class Fees

Mandatory fixed fees are added: Reservation Charge (₹20 for SL, ₹40 for 3A/2A, ₹60 for 1A) and Superfast Surcharge (₹30 for SL, ₹45 for 3A/2A, ₹75 for 1A).

Step 3

Dynamic Surge (If Applicable)

For premium trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto, flexi-fare increases base price in 10% steps for every 10% of berths booked, capping at a maximum of 1.5x.

Step 4

5% GST & Rounding

5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is applied to all Air-Conditioned classes (3E, 3A, 2A, 1A, CC, EC). Sleeper and General classes are strictly exempt from GST. Total is rounded to nearest ₹5.
