How Indian Railways Calculates Train Ticket Fares

Unlike airlines, Indian Railways fares are fixed and based on distance slabs

Every train ticket fare is calculated using a simple 4-step formula:

Step 1
Base Distance Tariff

Fixed per-km coaching tariff slabs (e.g. ₹490 for 1,000 km Sleeper, ₹1,239 for 3rd AC).

Step 2
Reservation Fee

Fixed booking fee: ₹20 for Sleeper, ₹40 for 3E/3A/CC, ₹50 for 2A, ₹60 for 1A.

Step 3
Superfast Surcharge

Applied to all Superfast & premier trains: ₹30 for Sleeper, ₹45 for 3E/3A/2A/CC, ₹75 for 1A.

Step 4
5% AC GST & Rounding

5% GST is applied exclusively to AC coaches (Non-AC is 0% exempt). Final amount is rounded to the nearest ₹5.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Quick answers to common train fare and ticketing questions

Why is 3-Tier Economy (3E) cheaper than 3rd AC (3A)?

3E coaches feature an 83-berth layout compared to 72 berths in standard 3A coaches. Due to higher passenger capacity, Indian Railways grants an official 8% base discount, saving you ₹70 to ₹120 per ticket.

Do Indian Railways fares change dynamically?

Most Indian trains (Superfast, Mail/Express) have fixed statutory fares that never surge. Dynamic flexi-pricing is limited to select trains like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Duronto, where fares increase by 10% for every 10% quota sold.

Is GST applied on Sleeper Class?

No. Sleeper Class (SL) and Second Sitting (2S) are 100% exempt from Goods & Services Tax (0% GST). Only air-conditioned coaches (3E, 3A, 2A, 1A, CC, EC) attract 5% GST.

How does the ₹5 rounding rule work?

According to official commercial circulars, all passenger railway tickets are rounded to the nearest multiple of ₹5. Amounts ending in ₹1 or ₹2 round down to ₹0; amounts ending in ₹3, ₹4, ₹6, or ₹7 round to ₹5; amounts ending in ₹8 or ₹9 round up to the next ₹0.
